arimatsu, nagoya. 有松、名古屋

in the end of april, the 29th, i made a first visit in arimatsu. it is one of a few places where u might be able to feel japanese traditional ways of life in nagoya. it is wellknown for its dyeing technique called arimatsu-shibori. since its located with a big distance from the central part of nagoya and no metro running but only meitetsu train, i dont think its that popular place for tourists from outside nagoya to visit. even for the locals of nagoya, i doubt if its popular weekend destination.

when i arrived, i was surprised positively by the built environment. many houses were preserved and renovated very well. i didnt expect to see such nice atmosphere actually. so i was happy about it. but thats it. i could feel that nagoya as a city really doesnt pay a good attention to this area as a valuable place for tourists. although the buildings were good and the scenary was more or less preserved, it doesnt provide any good chance for pedestrians to walk around. the trafic was rather busy. theres no way i could enjoy walking without harm. this is rediculous, i believe. it was city of nagoya and aichi prefecture that made them on the list of culturally valuable area or sth, yet no other support was given.

so id like to propose that there should be some restriction for trafic at least during the day time. the elec cables and poles should be got rid of. the surface of the road should be nicer like stone. the surrounding built environment should care more about its characteristics. and since its speciality is arimatsushibori-cloths, it should be used for place branding.

its easy to say this, but i know how difficult to make it distinguish from other similar tourists destinations...
