yesterday on christmas day, i went to meet my grandma to celebrate her 83 years old birthday. around her place, there is a gigantic condo developed, and i went to see it.

its called "Urbania Shiga Park (アーバニア志賀公園) and developed by one of the biggest real-estate agency in japan named UR. on UR's homepage, it is introduced as "a good environment with rich greenery." yet i somehow cant really agree with it. ok,  i thought its bit newer than 8 years old, but come on, the design of the architecture looks as if it is from the 1960s of functionalist ideal (or maybe bit too exaggerated tho). the shape of buildings are all same or at least very similar, and they were so colorless. as these gigantic blocks were just placed one to another, there was no exciting rhythm.

i do agree that to some extent it created some livable environment than ordinary obsolete condos which could be observed elsewhere in japan, after seeing hammerby sjostad in stockholm i dont really want to say that this development provides the best atmosphere.

then what could have been changed from here? easy way should be to use different colors and bring more benches. they would provide better atmosphere for pedestrians and residents to enjoy the area by walking, staying out, seeing and so on. although its way to late, but the location and the shape of individual buildings should be bit more differentiated. theres nothing more boring to see the same continuing boring shaped&colored boxes. by doing so, there should be more vibrant rhythm provided. it is unfortunate that such way would cost way more than just building the same boxes straight i guess, and surely less efficiently accommodate people. but i strongly believe that accommodation shouldnt be something ruled mainly by efficiency. hopefully this sort of trend of building something cost efficient will stop in the coming decade, or ill be the cornerstone to make it changed.

whenever i go to shibuya, i get always astonished by the number of people. nothing more nothing less, just by the quantity of people. especially this time was superb. as the christmas illuminations on omotesando-street is back after 11 years of break, there were thousands of millions of pedestrians flooding on the street, although the lightings were nothing special in my opinion. when i got off at the omotesando metro station, the flow of people was like an unstoppable tide, and on the street, nobody could resist to do anything else than walk and take pictures.

after i managed to walk to shibuya, again there was a series of human-flood once in a few minutes. it was absolutely crazy. but its even crazier that nobody seemed to be excited to see this great tokyo-ness, although watching people walking at the shibuya main street has been my great pleasure since this spring. no matter how many times i see, it never bores me.

i reconfirmed that going to shibuya shopping area on weekends is more like going crawling in people.

i made a 3days trip to tokyo for the first time since i moved back to japan. this time, naturally, the main purpose of my visit was to have an interview (turned out to be almost unsuccessful) and to attend a sort of explanation meeting of a planning consultant agency. but at the same time, it was also natural choice for me to stay much longer than it should take.

this time, i went to visit some areas where i had never been to before or i seldom visited when i was living in tokyo. for instance, i made my first time visit to tokyo uni, nakameguro, ebisu and daikanyama. above all, visiting tokyo university was much more exciting than i expected.

tokyo university is located in bunkyo ward, inside of yamanote line. my image of inside yamanote is always associated with super-fancy expensive skyscrapers. but it was not the case at all around tokyo uni. compared to the uni i went, there were much less greenery nearby, but there was a beautiful pond and trees in the campus. the buildings were often low and old (with some exceptions). because of them reminded me of my life back in europe. the latest building that world famous architect tadao ando built was super cool looking, but not outstanding oddly from the surroundings, and it made me feel bit surprised.

even though it was saturday, there were relatively many people both students and ordinary people. indeed the atmosphere in this campus was something special, it must be a popular destination for a walk for local people and some tourists like me.

after i walked through the uni, i headed the nezu shrine, which is also located in the same ward i guess. on the way there, the surrounding atmosphere was far from skyscraper image of tokyo, and was really cozy. there were so many ordinary lives. nothing fancy, nothing special. not many touristy people taking pictures everywhere except me and my friends. i became quite attracted to live around there if i could get a job in tokyo, although it is not necessarily happening yet.

nezu shringe was much much better than my high expectation. it was preserved as one of japan's national important treasures. it didnt have any commercial atmosphere unlike asakusa. and what i like the most was the path covered with numbers of shrine gates. it made me dizzy and happy at the same time. it was something extraordinary.

i dont think this area is so popular for tourists, but i would highly recommend this area for tourists. because it can show a totally different aspect from tokyo tourists would have, and therefore they can feel the diversity of tokyo.
